Dark sky sites - Summer Lake, Oregon

Continuing with a re-occuring theme in this blog -- another dark sky site for astronomy. Summer Lake, located in southeast Oregon, maybe one of the darkest sites in the Pacific Northwest! It is a seasonal lake blessed with three mountain ranges that provide an extensive rain shadow. The lake has three campgrounds. Two are located at the north end of the lake, with the third campground at the southern tip of the lake. The third campground, Summer Lake Hot Springs, has a spring-fed bath house as a bonus!

The skies are absolutely great, with no light domes visible on the horizon and the humidity is non-existent. The only real draw-back to this site is it's distance from civilization, the nearest large city is Bend, Oregon, 90 miles to the northwest. But that's also why the skies are so dark :-)

Climate Change Won't Go Away!

Last year's Climategate email scandal created a lot of confusion and doubt about climate change. Unfortunately the physics and science hasn't changed. The last decade was the warmest on record and this summer also saw record heat.
Climate change is here and isn't going away!

Review of "$20 Gallon"

Just finished listening to the audio book version of $20 per Gallon. A good listen, with the theme of what life would be with gasoline prices at different amounts. The author starts at $4 per gallon and works his way up from that price. The book strikes a hopeful note that life will actually become better as the rising price of petroleum forces us to stop using fossil fuels.

The indexing of the lifestyle changes to the price of gasoline was a nice touch. It's something everyone can relate to. Here's a link to the book's site:

Earth Hour next Saturday (March 27th 8:30pm)

Don't forget to turn your lights off (and everything else) on Saturday, March 27th for Earth Hour 2010. It may be symbolic, but it shows your support for action against Climate Change.

With health care reform done it will be back on Congress' radar screen soon.

Is Ending NASA's Constellation Program a Bad Move?

Probably not, IMHO. Doing a manned spaceflight program on the cheap was a bad idea. Shifting money from NASA's unmanned science program to fund this bad idea was even worse.

Many former astronauts believed that Constellation was an accident waiting to happen. Instead of recycling old ideas and hardware let's do the research and engineering required for a successful space program.

Obama did the right thing by killing a poorly conceived program.
